At Silver Oaks Residential Care Home, we love to celebrate life’s special moments and this October, we marked an incredible milestone. Our wonderful resident Kath turned 103 years old!
From heartfelt community support to a few surprises, Kath’s big day was one to remember for everyone involved.
In the weeks leading up to her birthday, our team reached out to Whitwick St John the Baptist Primary School, Penguin Preschool, and Whitwick Holy Cross School to see if their pupils might like to help us celebrate Kath’s amazing milestone.
The response was overwhelming - children and teachers lovingly handmade dozens of birthday cards and drawings for Kath. On the morning of her birthday, Kath was deeply moved as she opened the colourful creations filled with love and good wishes.
For Kath, who was never blessed with children of her own, this touching gesture meant the world. She joked that there were so many cards she’d still be opening them for days!

‍

The celebrations began the evening before Kath’s birthday, when she had the pleasure of a personal visit from Amanda Hack, the local MP. They spent time in Kath’s room chatting, laughing and sharing stories about her incredible life and experiences over the past century.

One of Kath’s favourite parts of the celebration was designing her own birthday menu and what a feast it was!
She chose her favourites - a classic prawn cocktail to start, followed by a traditional roast beef lunch with all the trimmings, homemade rice pudding for dessert and for her evening meal, a selection of cheese and biscuits with, of course, a large slice of birthday cake to finish.
Kath enjoyed her lunch in style, joined by her close friends Daph and Rob, as well as another resident and his wife. The private dining room was filled with laughter, good food and a few bottles of wine. The perfect way to celebrate such a special day.
To add an extra touch of magic to the day, the team surprised Kath with a “Silver Service Day.”Â
Every cup of tea, her breakfast, orange juice or glass of champagne was served on a silver tray, by staff dressed in white gloves, aprons and crisp napkins draped elegantly over their arms.
Kath absolutely loved the VIP treatment and we think she truly deserved it!

On the morning of her birthday, staff decorated the quiet lounge beautifully, arranging all of Kath’s cards, flowers, presents and even a birthday cake from one of the schools so she could easily enjoy them - As her room was already bursting with flowers, it looked like a florist.
Later in the day, Kath received some very special guests. Personnel from RAF Cranwell hand-delivered a birthday card and spent time chatting with her about her fascinating life. She was also visited by a veteran from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) who, as it turns out, lives locally and plans to keep in touch with Kath in future.

Kath’s 103rd birthday was a beautiful celebration of life, friendship and community spirit.
Thanks to the efforts of our incredible team, the support of local schools and special visitors from the RAF and WAAF, it was a day filled with love and laughter from start to finish.
Kath summed it up perfectly herself:
“It was one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had.”

From everyone at Silver Oaks thank you for making Kath’s birthday one we will never forget. Here’s to many more happy memories ahead. 💕

Whether you’re choosing a care home for yourself, or you’re a relative wanting to help your loved one find the perfect place, there are a lot of factors to consider.
You want to find the best possible care home for you or your loved one to reside in, so here’s what you should be looking for when searching for a good care home...
A day in life of a carer at Silver Oaks is never easy but is always rewarding. Our carers put our residents’ health and happiness at the forefront of their working day. Two days working at our boutique care home are never the same.
We spoke to our carers about what their life is like working at Silver Oaks, and what their day looks like from the minute they begin, to the second they finish up for the night.
At Silver Oaks, we understand that our boutique, care home is our residents’ home too and we make every effort to ensure your loved ones are looked after and made to feel at home.
This is especially important during the winter season, when the temperature drops and the environment outside gets a lot harsher.
‍
There are a lot of different types of care available, and even more kinds of care homes, all specialising in varied aspects of responsibilities and attention.
One type of care home that can be hugely beneficial to residents is the boutique care home. different from other care homes, like nursing and residential, simply because it’s smaller and provides a more personalised environment. But why should you consider a boutique care home for your loved one and what benefits do they have over the other types of care available.
Everyone is welcome to join us in our beautiful garden on Saturday 4th August. There will be live entertainment, including a theatre production, local craft stalls, games, hot food, raffle, tombola, drinks and delicious homemade cakes. We will be collecting for a chosen charity TBC.
