May has been another busy month at Silver Oaks, with residents enjoying a varied programme of activities, outings and special events. As the weather has become warmer, there have been more opportunities to spend time outdoors and within the local community, alongside a full calendar of themed celebrations, crafts, baking sessions and entertainment.
The month has also included some thoughtful moments that helped bring residents and staff together. We would like to say a special thank you to Adele, who kindly created personalised appreciation prints for each member of staff. It was a thoughtful gesture that was greatly appreciated by the team and a lovely reminder of the importance of recognising one another.

There was also a welcome surprise for residents and staff when a large selection of chocolates and sweets was shared around the home. Attached to each treat was a small positive message, helping to spread a little kindness and brighten everyone's day.

This month’s Peer Recognition Award was a special one. It was presented to Maxine, our longest-serving member of staff, who recently celebrated an impressive 14 years with Silver Oaks.
Maxine works nights and has become a familiar and valued presence within the home, providing consistent support and care to residents over many years. Her dedication, reliability and commitment were recognised by her colleagues, who nominated her for the positive contribution she makes to both residents and the wider team.
We would like to congratulate Maxine on this well-deserved recognition and thank her for her continued hard work and commitment to Silver Oaks.

Residents came together to mark VE Day with a day of themed activities and entertainment. The home was decorated with British flags, themed table settings and patriotic decorations, creating a fitting backdrop for the occasion.
A traditional British-themed lunch was enjoyed by residents, while VE Day and Second World War word searches encouraged discussion and reminiscence. The celebrations continued with live musical entertainment featuring songs from the wartime era and beyond. Many residents joined in with the singing, while staff added to the atmosphere with a few dances of their own. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on an important part of history while enjoying time together.

Arts and crafts have continued to play a big part in daily life at Silver Oaks. Residents enjoyed painting butterfly and owl windchimes, using a range of bright colours to create unique pieces to display around the home.
Another popular session saw residents make colourful heart-shaped wreaths for their bedroom doors. These creative activities provide a relaxed environment where residents can express their creativity and take pride in their finished work. The colourful displays have helped brighten the home and add a personal touch to residents' living spaces.

A touch of magic arrived at Silver Oaks as residents took part in a Harry Potter-themed day. Decorations helped transform the home, creating a fun setting for a variety of themed activities throughout the day.
Residents also enjoyed getting involved with baking, helping to prepare cakes and treats inspired by the occasion. The day sparked plenty of conversation and laughter, with many residents enjoying the chance to take part in something a little different.

Mental Health Awareness Week provided an opportunity to focus on wellbeing, connection and reflection. Residents created colourful decorations for the fireplace and wrote positive messages for display on the fairy light tree, helping to create welcoming and uplifting spaces around the home.
A tea and cake morning also encouraged residents to spend time together, sharing memories, stories and conversation in a relaxed setting. These simple opportunities to connect with one another are an important part of life at Silver Oaks and were enjoyed by all who took part.

Residents have made the most of the warmer weather with several outings during the month. A morning trip to Coalville provided the opportunity for some shopping and window browsing, allowing residents to get out into the community and enjoy a change of scenery. Our thanks go to Gems Taxi for helping make these trips possible.
Residents and staff also enjoyed a peaceful walk around Hermitage Lake, taking in the sunshine and enjoying the surroundings at a relaxed pace. The outing offered a chance to spend time outdoors and appreciate the improving weather.
Another popular trip saw residents visit The King's Arms, where they were able to relax with a drink and enjoy an afternoon together. These outings continue to be an important part of life at the home, providing opportunities for social interaction and independence.

Following requests from residents, we hosted a cheese and wine evening in the home. Residents enjoyed sampling a selection of cheeses accompanied by wine, while chatting with friends and staff in a comfortable setting.
The evening proved very popular. Resident-led activities such as these are always particularly well received, and it was lovely to be able to offer an event based on something residents had specifically asked for. The success of the evening has already sparked discussions about future social events at Silver Oaks.

One of the month's highlights was a visit from Lowes Livestock. Residents were able to meet and interact with a variety of animals, creating plenty of excitement.
Animal visits are always popular and provide a unique opportunity for residents to engage with something different. The visit was enjoyed by residents, staff and visitors alike and created many memorable moments.

Alongside these highlights, residents have continued to enjoy regular music sessions, games, baking activities and social events throughout the month. As we move into the summer season, we are looking forward to making the most of the longer days, spending more time outdoors and continuing to provide a varied programme of activities for everyone to enjoy.

One type of care home that can be hugely beneficial to residents is the boutique care home. different from other care homes, like nursing and residential, simply because it’s smaller and provides a more personalised environment.
